Picture of the Day

It has been raining for the past three days, so travelling is somewhat limited, but I have been going to class and went out to dinner with some students last evening. This picture was taken yesterday morning. I heard some sort of chanting and went outside to see what was happening. There were several monks walking up and down the street calling out something in Japanese. I wonder what they were saying. Plus, it was raining very hard at the time.

Ki, Zen monks beg for food and dana (offering) every day. In many orders, they eat but one meal a day, plus tea. It is, of course, good to share with them. They usually sing or chant their r prayers, as a way of asking.

P.S. Bruce describes going out for alms all year long with notheing but this hat, simple robes and sandals, even in the most frigid weather or pouring down rain. Not martyrdom, but simply a reminder to all lay practitioners that we are ALL interdependent, vulnerable and have the opportunity to be fully awake.

Love again

Kyle- I like your blog. Wondering if I can feature it on a college-only auction site I've made with four friends. We're all college students and we made our site (MyCollegeMarket.com) to allow college students to sell textbooks and stuff, but there's a just-for-fun section of our site, on which we feature student blogs. It looks like yours would be great. Check out MyCollegeMarket, and you can submit your blog yourself on the Poohah section of the site or just let me know you want it featured. Let me know: aramsay@ucla.edu.
